University of British Columbia (1908)

州政府がUBC建設の法案を通し、UBCの計画自体は1908年に始まった。ゴシック調のプランは3つのモールに沿って配置され、中央のモールの突端からはHowe Soundが望めた。UBCは1915年に開校される予定であったが世界大戦のため途中で計画が中止されてしまった。1915年に州政府とは独立した生徒らの運動でただちに工事再開を希望する請願書の50.000の署名が集まった。生徒らはデモを行い工事途中の化学棟に登った。結果工事は再開され、1925年にPoint Greyのキャンパスで講義が始まった。1960年代までは小さな規模の大学であったが、高等教育ブームで急速にキャンパスが拡大されていった。
The planning of UBC was started in 1908. The provincial government passed legislation of creating UBC. Gothic-inspired plans were decided by international competition, and the plan deployed along the three malls, the end of center mall prospected Howe Sound. UBC was supposed to open in 1915, the plan, however, ceased due to the Great War. In 1922, no action forthcoming from the province, a student campaign occurred and more than 50.0000 signatures were gathered on a petition which required completion of campus construction immediately. The students demonstrated a big rally and climbed on the girders of unfinished science building. Finally the construction restarted, and the classes started at Point Grey campus in 1925. Until the mid 1960s, UBC used to be a village-like university, though it began expanding rapidly due to the boom in higher education.
