カーネギーセンター / Carnegie Centre

実際訪れると、一目で分かる。いわゆる観光でのバンクーバーとは全く対照的な雰囲気の中心に位置しているのがこのカーネギーセンター。ただ、この施設自体は、１９０３年にバンクーバー最初のPublic Libraryとしてスタートしている。その後、現在の位置に図書館機能が移るとPacific Centreのオープンも手伝い、それまでの経済や金融や政治の中心は全て現在のダウンタウンに移ってしまった。そしてそこに根付いてきたドラッグだけが残り、この周辺が現在のようなスラム状態になってしまっている。現在カーネギーセンターはドラッグ、アルコールフリーの場として開放されていて、図書館機能も残っているがこの周囲の人たちの住宅問題解決のための運動や公共サービスを提供する場になっている。中には空調の効いた体育館まで備わっている。

At a glance, this building has different atmosphere and seems not to be welcomed for sightseeing. But this building started as a first public library in 1903. After the public library moved to current place, the center of downtown, finance, government and commerce, followed and the only drugs or any other situations, currently Vancouver faced, remained this place. Now the Carnegie Centre is opened for all of the people as a drug and alcohol free place. They serve reasonable meals, supported by skilled and willing volunteers, for people who can’t afford to have meals, and have even an air conditioned gym inside the building.
