ハーディング・メモリアル / Harding Memorial (1925)

1923年、アメリカ合衆国大統領Warren Hardingがカナダを訪問。そのとき彼は10時間しかバンクーバーにはいなかったが、アメリカ海軍の儀仗兵に護衛されながらの9ホールのゴルフに、1000人の聴衆の前でスピーチをした。彼は隣国としてカナダ国民に「卵を借りてこられる仲」と好意を示した。彼はその一週間後に貝毒で亡くなってしまう。二年後、地元のKiwanianが彼の記念碑を建てた。＊KiwanianとはKiwanisというボランティア団体に所属している人の呼称。
In 1923, U.S. President Warren Harding made a whirlwind visit. He was in Vanoucver only 10 hours, but managed to fit in nine holes of golf at Stanley Park, escorted by a U.S. Marine Honour Guard, and he made a speech in front of a thousand of people. At that time , he likened Canadians to good neighbours “from whom one could borrow an egg.” He died a week later from shellfish poisoning, contracted visit to Alaska. Two years later, local Kiwanians erected a monument to him. * Kiwanian is a name for people who join in Kiwanis, volunteer society.
