グランビルアイランドはFalse Creekと言う入り江の南側に位置する。もともと自然に出来た干潟でネーティブのスクワミッシュ民族の恰好の漁獲場だった。１９１６年にHarry Stevensと言う保守党の政治家の計画によって人口的に島へと造りかえられた。たくさんのスクワミッシュ民族はこの近辺のキツラノに住んでいたのだがお金（1.000~11.000ドル）と引き換えに出て行くように命じられた。１９２３年には島は工具、製鉄、造船所などの工場でいっぱいになった。水が豊富で、軌道車も通っていて運送ができ、安い賃貸だったため製造業にはもってこいの土地だったのだ。たちまちグランビルアイランドはブリティッシュコロンビア州の工業中心地にまで発展した。しかし、環境へ対しての配慮が乏しく、入り江はどんどん汚染され、工場も密集していたため火事が相次いだ。廃れた姿になってしまった。１９３６年に改装の計画が提案されたのだが、不況のため実行されなかった。１９６３年にはたくさんの工場が島を去って行ってしまっていた。１９６０年代中期からやっと改装が見直され、今までCanadian Pacific Railway 会社に統制されていた島を国の所有権に移した。公共のための公園、娯楽、文化、教養などをテーマに再建が行われた。今では昔からあるコンクーリート工場と工具工場の他にパブリックマーケット、レストラン、ホテル、ギャラリー、美術学校などがあり、いつも人で栄えている。バンクーバーで一番の観光地だそうだ。

バンクーバー寺 / Vancouver Buddhist Temple
もともとのバンクーバー寺はGastownにあった。バンクーバー寺教団は京都、西本願寺の系列で浄土真宗。1906年、32 Alexander通りに最初の寺院ができる。1940年代に他の建物同様第二次世界大戦のため閉じられることとなる。1954年からはメソジスト教会（キリスト教）が1978年まで使われる。そして1979年現在の建物が新しく建てられる。
Originally the Vancouver Buddhist Temple was located in Gastown. The organization is affiliated with the Nishi Hongwanji Temple of Kyoto, Japan, the mother temple of Jodo Shinshu (The Pure Land) sect of Buddhism. In 1906, the first place of the temple settled at 32 Alexander. In the 1940s, as well as other buildings, the temple was also had to be closed according to the WW II. Since 1954, Methodist Church building had been used at current location until 1978. And then, the current building was built in 1979.

マイカワ商店 / Maikawa & Co. General Store
まだ正面に"T.Maikawa"と残るこの建物は1936年に建てられた。これはこの場所一帯が100年以上も歴史のある日本人街である事を伝える数少ない証拠だ。マイカワ商店（Maikawa & Co. General Store）は1906年に開業し、すぐPowell通りで一番大きな商店になり最新のファッションを取り扱っていたが、世界大戦のため強制送還されてしまった。
The building, which still remained store name letters “T. Maikawa” on the façade, was built in 1936. It is one of the few historical signs that indicate the area has been Japantown for more than a hundred years. Maikawa & Co. General Store opened in 1906 and became the largest store on Powell St quickly and they carried latest fashions, but expelled since the WW II.

オッペンハイマー公園 / Oppenheimer Park
オッペンハイマー公園は日本からの移民が増え、日本人街が栄えていた1902年にオープンした。その公園には数多くの大会で優勝した、日系カナダ人で構成されたアサヒ・タイガースのホームグラウンドがあった。1938年には”血の日曜日”とよばれた千人規模のデモが行われた。1980年代後半からは、コカインの売買や乱用が問題になり、2009年に市によってリノベーションされる。そしてもとあった野球グラウンドは無くなってしまった。
Oppenheimer Park opened in 1902, when the number of immigrants was increasing and the Japantown thrived . The park has a baseball diamond which was a home ground of the Asahi Tigers, the team won so many championships and tournaments and consisted of Japanese-Canadian. In 1938, a thousand of people gathered at the park for demonstration of strike which called “Bloody Sunday”. Since the late 1980s, crack cocaine trade and addition has become problem, so the city board decided to renovate the park in 2009. And the baseball diamond which used to be there disappeared.

バンクーバーのいろは坂 ! / ABC Slope !
"バンクーバーのいろは坂"。実は言うほど大したものでもないが、とてつもなく無駄に折り返された、不思議で理解し難いスロープだ。なぜなら逆の歩道には普通のスロープがついている。
“Iroha-Zaka” is a winding road which is very famous for super curvy road in Japan. “Iroha” means ABC in Japanese, so I just named it "ABC Slope". It is curious and enigmatic why the only this slope is bended so many times in vain, because the other side of the road has a slope (not bended).

ツタエ ハナコ＆サトウ 記念図書館 / Tsutae & Hanako Sato Memorial Library
バンクーバー日本語学校内にあるツタエハナコ＆サトウ記念図書館は31.000冊の蔵書を誇り、小説やフィクションなどに限らず、語学を学ぶのに効果的な絵本や漫画までそろっている。これはＵＢＣについでＢＣ州で二番目の規模。この図書館は日本語に興味のある全ての人に開かれている。
Tsutae & Hanako Sato Memorial Library which is in the Vancouver Japanese School boasts 31.000 books collection, such as not only novels, fictions, but also pictorial books or even manga books that help learning language more efficiently. And it is the second largest collection in Japanese language in BC (after UBC). The library is open to everybody who is interested in Japanese language.

壁絵 ! / Wall Paintings !
この学校の校庭を一周している壁絵はこの日本人学校の生徒たちと、横浜から来た生徒たちで2002年に描かれたものだ。横浜とバンクーバーは1965年から姉妹都市協定を結んでいる。
The paintings were painted by the Japanese language school’s students and the students from Yokohama on the walls around playground in the Japanese School in 2002. Yokohama and Vancouver have had the sister city agreement since 1965.
