アヘン通り / Opium Street

PenderとHastingsに挟まれたMarket Alley界隈はアヘン通りと呼ばれていてアヘンが堂々と青空の下で作られていてバスケットに入れて通りに運ばれていっていた。その通りは鼻を突くキツイにおいがし、馬にぼろぼろのワゴンを引かせ、アヘンを持ったボタンのないコートを着た野菜売りの人たちでいっぱいだった。その通り沿いの建物はアヘンや風俗やギャンブルのための秘密の部屋になっていて、裏口の番人がその秘密の通路と地下の部屋にいる中毒者を見張っていた。1902年に警察は一人の中国人をアヘン容疑で逮捕し、そのニュースは周りの店にも広まった。＊もちろん今は状況は違います。
On the “Opium Street” which is in Market Alley between Pender and Hastings, opium was manufactured openly, and carried thorough the streets in baskets. The street fulfilled with pungent odour, there were a lot of vegetable peddlers with pigtails and button less coats, and horse-drawn junk wagons. The buildings along the street used as secret opium dens, baths and hidden gaming rooms and back door keepers controlled secret passenger ways and ruined men in the underground opium dens. In 1902, police captured one retreating Chinese by the pigtail. The news papers expanded the information to the clubs.
